Ritz-Carlton STARS is the commonly used name for booking an eligible Ritz-Carlton stay through Marriott STARS, Marriott’s preferred-partner program for selected luxury travel agencies. Eligible paid reservations typically include daily breakfast for two and a $100 hotel credit, along with upgrade priority when available, a welcome amenity and preferred-partner recognition.
The real decision is not whether those benefits sound useful. It is whether the STARS rate is the strongest booking for your dates. Ritz-Carlton hotels may also offer Marriott Bonvoy member rates, advance-purchase rates, complimentary-night promotions, packages and property-specific offers. Our Advisors compare the actual options before recommending how to book.
Why Trust This Ritz-Carlton Guide
I’m Andrew Satkowiak, Executive Vice President and Co-Founder of The Luxury Travel Agency. I have spent 13 years at The LTA. Before that, I spent more than a decade traveling internationally and writing more than 1,000 hotel, restaurant and airline reviews. I have personally stayed at more than 50 Ritz-Carlton hotels and resorts worldwide, including most Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties, and I have sailed with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection as a full-paying guest. That firsthand experience gives me a practical understanding of how Ritz-Carlton properties differ, which benefits genuinely matter and where booking through an experienced Advisor can add meaningful value.
What Is Ritz-Carlton STARS?
Ritz-Carlton STARS is not a loyalty program that travelers join. The reservation must be made through an Advisor with access to Marriott STARS and booked using an eligible paid rate.
The program adds meaningful amenities, but it does not replace good hotel advice. A city hotel, a Caribbean resort and a remote island property can all carry The Ritz-Carlton name while serving very different trips.
A couple spending three nights in New York may care most about location and departure-day timing. A family at a resort may need confirmed connecting rooms, specific bedding and clearly understood occupancy limits. A milestone traveler booking a suite may care more about privacy, outdoor space or a particular view than about a possible upgrade.
Our role is to evaluate the entire reservation: the property, room or suite category, rate, cancellation terms, current promotions and applicable STARS benefits. We can also communicate important preferences and celebration details to the hotel and assist before, during and after the stay when follow-up is needed.
What Ritz-Carlton STARS Benefits Do You Receive?
For an eligible paid Ritz-Carlton stay booked through Marriott STARS, benefits typically include:
- Daily breakfast for up to two guests per room
- A $100 hotel or resort credit once per stay
- Room upgrade priority, subject to availability
- A personalized welcome amenity and note
- Preferred-partner recognition by the hotel
Benefits are attached to the eligible reservation, not simply to the fact that the property is a Ritz-Carlton. Award stays, deeply discounted rates and some packages or promotions use a different booking structure.
The hotel also determines how the $100 credit may be used. It should not be treated as cash or assumed to reduce the room charge. The Luxury Travel Agency confirms the applicable benefits and restrictions for the specific reservation before booking.
Breakfast Can Be Especially Valuable at The Ritz-Carlton
Breakfast is one of the most practical STARS benefits because it repeats every day of the stay. At an expensive city hotel or resort, breakfast for two can quickly be worth substantially more than the one-time hotel credit.
It also fills a gap that surprises some Marriott Bonvoy members. Under Marriott Bonvoy’s current terms, complimentary restaurant breakfast is not a standard Platinum Elite welcome benefit at The Ritz-Carlton. Marriott also excludes rooms with direct Club access from complimentary elite room upgrades.
For an eligible paid stay, STARS can therefore add meaningful value even for a traveler who already has high Marriott Bonvoy status.

The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, offers a peaceful courtyard setting in the heart of the French Quarter.
The $100 Hotel Credit Is Useful, but the Details Matter
The STARS benefit generally includes a $100 credit once per stay. Its permitted use is determined by the hotel. Depending on the property, dining, spa services or another eligible hotel charge may be the most practical way to use it.
We do not assume that the credit can be used toward the room rate or every charge posted to the folio. Before the stay, The Luxury Travel Agency can confirm how the property currently structures the benefit.
An Upgrade Is a Possibility, Not a Room-Selection Strategy
Upgrade priority is subject to availability. If a terrace, ocean view, connecting room, two beds or a defined suite layout is essential, book the category that provides it.
An upgrade should improve an already acceptable reservation. It should not be expected to rescue a reservation that was booked in a category the traveler would otherwise find disappointing.
The difference between categories is not consistent across the brand. At one Ritz-Carlton, the next category may add a meaningfully better view or substantial extra space. At another, the practical difference may be minor. We review the actual category progression before treating an upgrade as a major reason to book.
This matters most during holidays and other high-demand periods, when occupancy can leave little room for discretionary upgrades.

An ocean-view suite at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, where choosing the right room category matters more than relying on a possible upgrade.
Ritz-Carlton STARS vs. Booking Direct
Booking through Marriott STARS does not mean ignoring the hotel’s publicly available rates. A useful comparison starts there.
The Ritz-Carlton may display several options for the same room: a flexible rate, a Marriott Bonvoy member rate, an advance-purchase rate, a package or a seasonal promotion. The STARS booking is generally based on an eligible rate rather than the lowest restricted rate displayed online.
A cheaper rate can still be the right choice. If the savings are substantial and the cancellation terms are acceptable, the math may favor it. On another stay, daily breakfast for two, the $100 credit, upgrade priority, preferred-partner recognition and more flexible terms can make STARS the better overall value.
We compare the total booking rather than focusing only on the nightly rate. That includes:
- The exact room or suite category
- Taxes and mandatory charges
- Included benefits
- Deposit and cancellation requirements
- Promotion eligibility
- Marriott Bonvoy earning eligibility
- Any meaningful restrictions attached to the rate
Can Ritz-Carlton STARS Benefits Be Combined With Promotions?
Sometimes. Ritz-Carlton hotels periodically offer complimentary-night promotions, resort packages, seasonal offers and property-specific incentives. Some can be booked with STARS benefits; others use a rate that does not qualify.
A complimentary fourth night can be worth far more than a modest difference in the nightly rate. A resort package with a larger credit may change the calculation again. The strongest booking can vary from one property to another and from one week to the next.
We sometimes also have access to special promotions that may include complimentary nights, private transfers, an upgrade confirmed at the time of booking or additional hotel credits. Availability varies by property, room category and travel date.

Do You Still Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points and Elite Credit?
On an eligible paid Marriott STARS reservation, travelers can add their Marriott Bonvoy number and earn qualifying points and elite-night credit while receiving applicable status recognition.
That is an important distinction from many reservations made through third-party online travel agencies, which may not qualify for Marriott Bonvoy points, elite-night credit or status benefits.
Bonvoy status and STARS address different parts of the stay. A traveler may receive eligible Bonvoy recognition while also receiving the breakfast, hotel credit, welcome amenity and preferred-partner treatment attached to the STARS reservation.
Do not count the same benefit twice. Two potential upgrade paths do not mean two guaranteed category jumps, and a preferred-partner request does not override the hotel’s availability.
Ritz-Carlton STARS vs. Virtuoso and Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts
More than one preferred booking channel may occasionally be available for the same Ritz-Carlton hotel. Marriott STARS is Marriott’s own preferred-partner program for participating luxury properties. Virtuoso and American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts are separate programs with their own rates, eligibility rules and benefits.
There is no reason to force every stay through the same channel. We look at the rate, confirmed amenities, promotion eligibility, cancellation terms and the benefits that matter most for the particular trip.
Late checkout may be especially important before an evening flight. At a resort, daily breakfast and a usable hotel credit may matter more. For a suite stay, choosing the right category and securing any element the hotel is willing to confirm in advance may outweigh a small difference in secondary benefits.
Should You Book Ritz-Carlton Club Level?
Club Level can substantially change the character of a Ritz-Carlton stay. The brand’s Club Level experience typically includes access to a private lounge, a dedicated Concierge and several food-and-beverage presentations throughout the day. The exact offering varies by hotel.
Club Level can be useful for families who appreciate convenient food throughout the day, travelers who want a quieter place to work or relax and guests who expect to spend meaningful time at the hotel.
It may be unnecessary for travelers who plan to leave the hotel early each morning and return late in the evening. The additional cost can sometimes be better directed toward a larger room, a suite or a more desirable view.
We look at the price difference and the actual Club offering at the property. At some Ritz-Carlton hotels, Club Level is central to the experience. At others, a better room or suite without Club access may be the smarter use of the budget.
Good to Know
Marriott Bonvoy elite upgrades do not include direct Ritz-Carlton Club access. If the lounge experience matters, book Club Level deliberately rather than expecting an upgrade to provide it.
When Can Ritz-Carlton STARS Be Especially Valuable?
Longer Resort Stays
Daily breakfast becomes increasingly valuable on a longer resort stay because the benefit repeats each day. When combined with the one-time hotel credit, upgrade priority and preferred-partner recognition, it can materially improve the overall booking value.

Short City Stays
For a short city stay, location, room size, breakfast and departure-day timing can have an outsized effect. A hotel can be excellent and still be wrong for the itinerary if the traveler will spend too much time crossing the city.
Breakfast can also be disproportionately valuable on a two- or three-night city stay, particularly at hotels where a full breakfast for two would otherwise be a significant daily expense.

The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown occupies a distinctive industrial landmark in one of Washington, D.C.’s most historic neighborhoods.
For travelers comparing major European city hotels, our guide to luxury hotels in London can help narrow the field before the room-category decision begins.
Families Booking Multiple Rooms
Families should not rely on an upgrade request to solve a room-configuration problem. Connecting rooms, adjoining rooms, occupancy limits, bedding and the ages of the children need to be addressed before arrival.
When several rooms are involved, we can clearly communicate the relationships between travelers and identify which requests are priorities. The hotel still controls availability, but accurate information is far better than arriving with assumptions that were never confirmed.
Suites, Milestones and High-Value Stays
For a honeymoon, anniversary, major birthday or expensive suite stay, the decision usually goes beyond the benefits list. A better terrace, a more private setting or the correct suite layout may be worth considerably more than a hoped-for upgrade.
The preferred-partner relationship can also help ensure that the hotel is aware of an important celebration or high-priority request. Recognition does not guarantee an upgrade or a specific amenity, but it gives the hotel accurate context before arrival.
We can also coordinate the Ritz-Carlton stay with private transfers, guides, additional hotels and other trip components when the reservation is part of a larger journey.
The Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Are Different Products
This guide primarily focuses on The Ritz-Carlton hotels and resorts participating in Marriott STARS.
Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a smaller and more experiential resort collection. Reserve properties are generally designed around a distinctive destination and a more immersive sense of place. Their locations, accommodations, inclusions and planning considerations can differ significantly from a traditional Ritz-Carlton city hotel or resort.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is different again. It is a luxury yacht product rather than a hotel stay, with its own fares, suites, itineraries, dining program and booking considerations.

Why Book The Ritz-Carlton Through The Luxury Travel Agency?
A preferred-partner benefits list is easy to describe. The harder part is making the correct booking decision.
The Luxury Travel Agency can help you:
- Compare an eligible Marriott STARS rate with current promotions and other available booking options
- Confirm the benefits attached to the specific reservation
- Choose the right room, suite or Club Level category without relying on an uncertain upgrade
- Communicate important preferences, celebrations and family requirements to the hotel
- Add the traveler’s Marriott Bonvoy number to an eligible reservation
- Coordinate transfers, guides, additional hotels and other trip components when needed
- Provide support before, during and after the stay when an issue requires follow-up
We use STARS when it improves the booking. We do not recommend a hotel simply because we can attach preferred-partner benefits to it. The property, room category, rate and trip still have to make sense for the client.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ritz-Carlton STARS
How Do You Book Ritz-Carlton STARS?
Ritz-Carlton STARS benefits are accessed through an eligible paid Marriott STARS reservation made by a participating luxury travel agency. Travelers do not enroll in or join the program directly.
What Benefits Do You Receive With Ritz-Carlton STARS?
Eligible Ritz-Carlton STARS bookings typically include daily breakfast for two, a $100 hotel credit once per stay, upgrade priority subject to availability, a welcome amenity and preferred-partner recognition. The exact benefits and eligible rate should be confirmed for the specific hotel and reservation.
Is Marriott STARS the Same as Marriott Bonvoy?
No. Marriott Bonvoy is Marriott’s consumer loyalty program. Marriott STARS is a preferred-partner booking program available through selected luxury travel agencies. An eligible paid STARS reservation can include a Bonvoy number and earn qualifying points and elite-night credit.
Is Breakfast Included for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Members at The Ritz-Carlton?
Complimentary restaurant breakfast is not a standard Platinum Elite welcome benefit at The Ritz-Carlton. An eligible STARS booking can add daily breakfast for two even when Marriott Bonvoy status does not include it.
Is a Ritz-Carlton STARS Upgrade Guaranteed?
No. Upgrade priority is subject to availability. Book the room or suite category you would be comfortable keeping if no upgrade becomes available.
Can STARS Benefits Be Combined With a Ritz-Carlton Promotion?
Sometimes. Some promotions can be booked with STARS benefits, while other rates or packages do not qualify. The best approach is to compare the exact offer, rate and terms for your travel dates. Ask one of our Advisors to review the options before you book.
Can I Use Ritz-Carlton STARS Benefits on a Points Stay?
No. STARS benefits are tied to eligible paid rates rather than Marriott Bonvoy award stays. If you are comparing a points redemption with a paid preferred-partner booking, consider both the value of the points and the hotel benefits you would give up.
Can I Book Ritz-Carlton Club Level Through STARS?
Yes, eligible Club Level rooms and suites may be booked through Marriott STARS when a qualifying rate is available. Club Level should be selected intentionally because neither Marriott Bonvoy elite status nor an ordinary upgrade request should be expected to provide complimentary Club access.
Does The Luxury Travel Agency Charge a Fee to Book a Ritz-Carlton Hotel?
No. The Luxury Travel Agency does not charge a planning fee for a straightforward hotel-only reservation. Complex, multi-component itineraries may involve a planning fee that is discussed in advance.
