Driving Through New England: A Guide for a Wonderful Trip

The region of New England has long been a dream pick for summer and early autumn vacations. The appeal of lakeside living is undeniable, and the range of outdoor pursuits are endless. Of course, the Atlantic coastline is never far away!

The northeast is best explored by car, with attractions aplenty and beautiful properties to enjoy them from. Take your time to sample the fruits of the region! The Luxury Travel Agency partners with all of New England’s top choices; below are a few of our favourites, laid out in our recommended route:

1) Chatham Inn. After landing into Boston, hop in your rental and drive about 90 minutes southeast to Cape Cod. No summertime trip to New England is complete without a visit here, perhaps the region’s most prestigious seaside real estate. At the very “heel” of the Cape lies Chatham Inn, the oldest operating hotel on the entire peninsula. Chatham marries the luxury and prestige of a historic inn with a modern style and sensibility, having completed a full renovation this past summer. With only 18 rooms, a stay at Chatham Inn is one of Cape Cod’s most exclusive experiences; and with their fine dining restaurant ranked #1 in all of the Cape, it needs to be!

2) Ocean House. From Chatham, spend a day driving the coastline west to Rhode Island, exploring the sights and tastes of towns dotted along your way; if you’re going direct, it’s a mere 2 ½ hours to Ocean House, our top Rhode Island pick. Situated on the tip of the Watch Hill peninsula, Ocean House leads the way in coastal luxury accommodation. A variety of options await incoming guests: multi-bedroom cottages with private pools are a haven for traveling families, while expansive terraced suites offer uninterrupted ocean views for you and your partner. This is the only property in New England that serves refreshments to its guests directly on their private beach – need we say more?

3) Inn at Hastings Park. It’s time to head back to Boston – but why stay in the cramped confines of downtown with your set of wheels? Just under two hours northeast of Ocean House, you’ll pull into the driveway at Hastings Park, only 15 miles outside of central Boston (and even closer to the major universities on the north side). This proximity to the city makes the Inn a perfect choice for exploring Boston while also enjoying the peace and privacy of a luxurious country home. Bike tours and picnic lunches are an excellent complement to urban activities, and the hosted Saturday Afternoon Tea is the cherry on top to your New England road trip!
